Members-Only Shopify: OTP Login and Tiered Offers for Unidukan

Unidukan is Unilever's dedicated shopping platform, bringing products from its brands into one place. It was built first for Unilever employees, with access also planned for employees of selected partner companies.

That's very different from an open store. Who can get in, which offers they see and which products appear all depend on who's shopping. We built custom Shopify functionality to make those rules work together across devices.

Who's Shopping Decides What They See

  1. Shoppers log in with a one-time code. No passwords to remember, just a code sent when they sign in.
  2. Their group is identified. Unilever employees and partner-company employees are recognised as separate audiences.
  3. Each group gets its own experience. Offers and product feeds are tailored to the audience instead of one public discount for everyone.
  4. Checkout works the same for all. The rules sit in the background, so the purchase flow stays familiar.
Access flow: shoppers log in with a one-time code, their company group is identified, employees and partners each see their own offers, and both reach the same checkout.

OTP

One-time-code login instead of passwords.

2

Audiences: employees and partner-company staff.

Tiered

Discounts by audience, not one public code.

Built on Shopify, Extended Where Needed

Standard Shopify covers products, cart and checkout. Everything beyond that, including access control, eligibility and the tailored feeds, was added with custom Shopify extensions and supporting services on Google Cloud Platform.

Reusable interface components and responsive layouts kept the experience consistent on desktop and mobile, whichever group the shopper belongs to.

Testing every audience, not just one

When different people see different prices, every path needs checking. An employee and a partner-company shopper must each get the right offers, and nobody should see a discount meant for someone else. That's the kind of checkout testing in our Shopify launch QA checklist.

The takeaway

Shopify can power far more than a public storefront. With careful extensions, the same platform can run a members-only shop where access, offers and products adapt to each shopper.
