Building a Gift Hamper Builder Inside a Shopify Theme for Petersham Nurseries
Petersham Nurseries wanted customers to build their own gift hamper, choosing the items that go inside. The challenge was making that feel effortless for shoppers, simple for the team to manage, and clear for whoever packs the order.
We built the hamper builder inside Petersham's existing Liquid theme, using native Shopify products and collections rather than a separate app or admin.

From Collection to Packed Hamper
- The team curates a collection. Adding or removing products from one dedicated collection changes what shoppers can choose. There's no extra admin to learn.
- Shoppers pick at least three items. A live summary updates as items are added or removed, so it's always clear what's in the hamper.
- Everything goes into the cart together. The chosen items and the gift box are added in a single request.
- The hamper arrives at fulfilment as one. Shared line-item properties mark which products belong to the hamper, so it's packed as a set.
Rules That Keep Gifting Simple
- A three-item minimum makes sure every hamper feels like a proper gift.
- One hamper per order keeps checkout and fulfilment straightforward.
- The gift box is always included, so nobody forgets the packaging.
- The selection is checked before it reaches the cart, so an incomplete hamper never gets through.
Why build it in the theme
A hamper builder could have been a separate app. Building it in the theme meant it uses the products, prices and stock Petersham already manages in Shopify, and the team maintains it the same way they maintain any collection.
