Wix to Shopify Migration: A Step-by-Step Guide for Growing Stores

A Wix to Shopify migration usually happens at the same moment in a brand's life. The site started as a website with a shop attached, and now the shop is the business. Wix did its job, but the store needs deeper commerce tools, more apps and a checkout built for volume.

This guide is for the owner or ecommerce manager planning that move. It covers what transfers from Wix, what doesn't, the order to do the work in and how to keep your search traffic. It's based on migrations we've run at Spell&Sell, a London Shopify Plus Partner that has launched more than 321 stores since 2018, including JellyBean Tanning's move from Wix to Shopify.

Why merchants move from Wix to Shopify

The Wix merchants we work with rarely leave because something is broken. They leave because the store has outgrown a platform designed to do many jobs at once.

Commerce depth. Shopify is built around selling. Inventory across locations, B2B, markets for international pricing and languages, and a large partner ecosystem are all part of the core platform or one app away.

Checkout. Shopify's checkout and Shop Pay are a major reason brands choose it. Most Wix merchants we speak to are moving partly for conversion.

Apps and integrations. Subscription, loyalty, reviews, ERP, 3PL and marketing tools are built for Shopify first. That means less custom work to connect the stack you want.

Team and hiring. It's easier to find developers, agencies and staff who already know Shopify.

If your store is small and simple, Wix may still be the right home. Move when the platform is holding the business back, not because a competitor did.

What moves from Wix to Shopify, and what doesn't

Here is where the main Wix records usually end up.

  • Products, options, SKUs, prices, stock and images: Yes, as Shopify products and variants. Shopify allows up to 2,048 variants per product but only three options, so any Wix product with more than three options needs restructuring.
  • Categories and collections: Yes, as Shopify collections.
  • Customers and contacts: Yes, after deduplication. Marketing consent needs to move with them.
  • Customer passwords: No. They are stored as one-way hashes. Customers activate their accounts or sign in with a one-time code.
  • Order history: Yes, but not through Shopify's native CSV import. Wix lets you export orders, and an import app or the API brings them into Shopify.
  • Reviews: Shopify's own Wix guide says reviews can't be exported or migrated with the standard tools, so plan a separate route into a review app such as Judge.me, Loox or Yotpo.
  • Wix Blog posts and pages: Yes, as Shopify blog articles and pages. Layouts are rebuilt as theme sections.
  • CMS Collections and dynamic pages: With mapping. They become Shopify metaobjects, pages or templates.
  • Pricing Plans and subscriptions: Depends. Recurring plans move to a Shopify subscription app, and customers may need to re-enter payment details.
  • Bookings, Members, forms and automations: No direct transfer. Each needs a Shopify app or workflow, or a decision to retire it.
  • Gift cards and store credit: Partly. Balances are recreated, and gift card codes may need reissuing.
  • Discount codes: Recreated in Shopify.
  • Page SEO titles and descriptions: Yes, into Shopify's SEO fields.

Pre-migration checklist

  1. Crawl the live site with Screaming Frog or Sitebulb and list every indexable URL, with titles, descriptions and canonicals.
  2. Export your traffic data. Pull the top landing pages from Google Search Console and GA4 for the last 12 months, and note pages with backlinks.
  3. Check your Wix URL settings. In Wix's SEO settings, note the URL prefixes for product pages, blog posts and any CMS dynamic pages. Many sites have customised them.
  4. List the redirects you already have in Wix's URL Redirect Manager. They need to be chained into the new map, not lost.
  5. Count everything. Products, variants, customers, orders, blog posts, pages and reviews. This is your baseline for checking the import.
  6. List every Wix app you use: Bookings, Pricing Plans, Members, Forms, Wix Chat, automations and third-party apps. Give each one a Shopify replacement or a retirement decision.
  7. Decide how much order history to bring. Customer service and reporting usually need it. Very old orders may not.
  8. Check your domain. Note whether it was bought through Wix or a registrar, and which records your email depends on.
  9. Agree a content freeze for the days before cutover.

How to migrate from Wix to Shopify, step by step

1. Set up Shopify and the content model

Create the store, then set up collections, metafields and metaobjects before importing. If you use Wix CMS Collections, design their Shopify equivalent now.

2. Choose your tools

Shopify has a first-party Store Migration app in early access that imports Wix products and customers. Shopify notes it doesn't support prices by location, and products with more than three options won't have their options imported. For orders, Shopify points to third-party apps such as Cart2Cart, LitExtension, EZ Importer and MigrationPro. Matrixify is useful when you want full control over a prepared spreadsheet.

These work well for a simple catalogue. Where order history, deduplication and verification matter, we write purpose-built import tooling instead. Our Wix to Shopify migration service page explains when each route makes sense.

3. Clean and prepare the product export

Export products from the Wix dashboard as CSV and map the columns to Shopify's product template. Shopify's guide flags some easy-to-miss details:

  • Weights need converting from kilograms to grams for Shopify's template.
  • Handles must not contain spaces or special characters.
  • Products with a missing variant option may fail to import and need fixing by hand.
  • Untick "Publish new products to all sales channels" so nothing goes live before it's checked.

4. Import customers

Export contacts from Wix and match them to Shopify's customer CSV headers exactly, because there's no column mapping on customer imports. Deduplicate first. Wix contact lists often include form leads and subscribers, not just buyers.

5. Import order history

Products first, then customers, then orders, so each order links to the right customer and variant. Turn off staff new-order notifications first, or your team gets an email for every historical order. Make sure the import doesn't email customers, charge cards or change stock.

6. Verify, then build

Reconcile counts and totals against your Wix baseline after every batch. Then build the theme, reconnect apps and tracking, and test checkout, shipping, tax and payments end to end.

7. Cut over

Run the final delta for new customers and orders, import redirects, point the domain at Shopify and watch closely for the first few weeks.

For a real example of this process, read how we migrated JellyBean Tanning's customers and order history from Wix. Every order in the final batch was independently verified, with zero duplicates.

SEO: mapping Wix URLs to Shopify

Wix and Shopify use different URL structures, so nearly every indexable URL changes. Wix's defaults are:

  • Product: /product-page/linen-shirt becomes /products/linen-shirt on Shopify.
  • Blog post: /post/how-to-choose-linen becomes /blogs/news/how-to-choose-linen.
  • Page: /about becomes /pages/about.
  • Shop and category pages: become /collections/<handle>.
  • CMS dynamic pages: use whatever pattern you set in Wix, mapped to a metaobject page, a page or a collection.

Check your own Wix SEO settings, as both the product and blog prefixes can be customised.

How to handle it:

  1. Keep slugs as Shopify handles where possible, so each redirect is one-to-one.
  2. Map every indexable URL, including blog posts, which often carry more organic traffic than products.
  3. Collapse redirect chains. If Wix already redirects an old URL, point it straight at the final Shopify URL.
  4. Redirect to the closest match, never the homepage.
  5. Import the redirects by CSV in Shopify's URL redirects admin. Stores outside Plus can have up to 100,000.
  6. Remember the rules. Shopify only redirects URLs that would otherwise 404, and Wix's Redirect Manager stops applying once your domain points at Shopify, so every redirect you need must live in Shopify.
  7. Move titles and meta descriptions into Shopify's SEO fields and check internal links in your content.

After launch, submit the new sitemap in Search Console and check the coverage and 404 reports weekly.

Apps that replace Wix features

  • Wix Members area: Shopify customer accounts.
  • Wix Forms: Shopify Forms or a form app.
  • Pricing Plans and subscriptions: Shopify Subscriptions, Recharge, Skio or Loop.
  • Wix Bookings: A Shopify booking app, chosen for your type of appointment.
  • Wix Chat: Shopify Inbox.
  • Wix Automations: Shopify Flow, plus Shopify Email or Klaviyo for marketing automation.
  • CMS Collections: Shopify metaobjects.
  • Reviews: Judge.me, Loox or Yotpo.

Choose the fewest apps that do the job. Each adds cost and scripts to the storefront.

Timeline and team

Most Wix to Shopify migrations take 4 to 6 weeks. Subscriptions, bookings, a large blog or a full redesign can extend that.

  • Week 1: Discovery, crawl, app inventory and mapping.
  • Weeks 2 to 4: Store setup, test imports, theme build and integrations.
  • Week 5: Testing and cutover rehearsal.
  • Week 6: Launch, final delta and monitoring.

You'll need a decision maker, someone who knows the catalogue and customers, and whoever owns marketing and tracking. Delays usually come from open decisions, not the build.

Common Wix migration mistakes

  • Forgetting blog redirects. /post/ URLs are often the best-ranking pages on a Wix site.
  • Losing existing Wix redirects instead of chaining them into the new map.
  • Importing every contact as a customer. Clean the list and carry consent correctly.
  • Importing orders with notifications on.
  • Assuming reviews will come across with the products.
  • Leaving subscriptions until last. Customers may need to re-enter payment details, which needs a communication plan.
  • Switching DNS without checking email records.

Yes. Wix lets you export orders, and an import app or a custom tool brings them into Shopify, linked to customers and products.

Not if every indexable URL is mapped and redirected to its closest match. Expect some short-term movement and monitor Search Console after launch.
